Martial
Raysse
Martial Raysse (born in 1936 in Golfe-Juan) is a major figure in modern and contemporary art, recognized as one of the pioneers of Pop Art in France.
In the 1960s, he established himself through a work in line with consumer society, before making a fundamental return to painting and especially to drawing in the 1970s. The latter becomes the core of his practice: structuring, autonomous, and carrying a profound reflection on artistic tradition.
His drawings demonstrate a mastery of the line inherited from the Old Masters, where the line constructs idealized figures, often inspired by mythology and art history. Far from simple preparatory work, drawing at Raysse constitutes a space for creation in its own right, where an intellectual and timeless vision of the image unfolds.
This artistic requirement is recognized by the largest institutions. The Centre Pompidou in Paris has devoted an important retrospective to him covering several decades of creation, bringing together paintings, sculptures, films and drawings, highlighting the richness and diversity of his work.
Presented in numerous museum exhibitions, Martial Raysse is now an essential artist, whose drawing is the key to reading a work at the crossroads of modernity and tradition.
