Tutundjian

1905-1968

Léon Tutundjian is a French painter and sculptor of avant-garde Armenian origin, considered to be one of the pioneers of abstract art.

After training at the Beaux-Arts in Istanbul, he moved to Paris and became friends with Ervand Kotchar and David Kakabadzé who influenced him in his art. Born from a teacher mother and a physics-chemistry teacher father, Léon Tutundjian maintained a taste for science, which then became a source of inspiration. His encounters with artists and intellectuals of his time, such as Jean Arp, Sophie Taeuber-Arp, and Michel Seuphor, profoundly influenced his work.

He produced a work of great sensitivity and diversity, whose delicacy crossed both his abstract and surrealist periods. Whether it's collages, drawings, gouaches, or oils, his work cuts across geometric abstraction, cosmic abstraction, biomorphic art, concrete art, automatic writing, automatic writing, tachism, and surrealism. He is one of the founding members of the “Concrete Art” and “Abstraction-Creation” movements.

Tutundjian regularly exhibits in prestigious galleries, including Galerie Jeanne Bucher and Galerie Denise René in Paris. His work is also presented in several international exhibitions, affirming his reputation beyond French borders. He participates in exhibitions in the Netherlands, Sweden, Sweden, Switzerland, Italy and the United States.

His works are preserved in numerous institutions in France and abroad, such as the Pompidou Center, the Pompidou Center, the Museum of Modern Art of the City of Paris, the Museum of Grenoble, the Museums of Fine Arts of Lyon and Lille, the Museums of Modern and Contemporary Art in Saint-Étienne and Strasbourg, the Museums of Modern Art in Saint-Étienne and Strasbourg, the Museum of Modern Art in Saint-Étienne and Strasbourg, at the Institute of Modern Art in Valence, at the Institute of Modern Art in Valence, at the Louisana Museum of Modern Art in Humlebæk, at the Berdado Museum in Lisbon, in the Albright Knox Gallery and MoMA in New York.
