Arman

1928-2005

Armand Fernandez, known as “Arman”, is a French-American painter, sculptor and visual artist recognized worldwide for his innovative work around accumulation.

After studying at the School of Decorative Arts in Nice, Arman became passionate about the status of the object and the relationship that modern societies maintain to it, oscillating between sacralization, overconsumption and destruction. He distinguished himself by being one of the first artists to use manufactured objects as pictorial material.

In 1950, he became one of the founding members of the Nouveaux Réalistes, alongside Yves Klein and Jean Tinguely. The group, which focuses on “new perceptual approaches to reality”, is praised by critic Pierre Restany. They were quickly joined by caesar, Niki de Saint Phalle and Gérard Deschamps. Arman also produces a large quantity of engraved and lithographed works, especially at the Patrick workshop, where also work Guillaume Corneille and Jean Dubuffet. From 1965, he started screen-printing, thus exploring new artistic horizons.

Arman's works are preserved in large museum and private collections as well as in public spaces in a hundred cities. Its international reputation is undeniable and its influence in the field of contemporary art is palpable. This is evidenced by the retrospectives devoted to him, in particular that of the Centre Pompidou in 2010 and that of the Tinguely Museum in 2011.
