Lucie Hessel on the beach in Saint-Jacut
1909, Pastel and graphite on paper, 9 x12.8 cm,
Monogram stamp at the bottom left

Between 1900 and 1905, the artist Félix Vallotton presented Vuillard to Lucie and Jos Hessel, his future dealer.

Throughout the summer of 1909, the couple stayed in Brittany by the sea, in Saint-Jacut, where they rented the villa “Les Écluses”. It is on this beach that Vuillard represents Lucie lying down here.

In the foreground, treated with black pencil, he draws her asleep. The sunlight piercing through the Breton sky is evoked by means of small touches of golden pastel, while in the distance a very strong blue line restores the reflections of the sea.
