À propos de cette oeuvre

Comparable to the large drawing The Judgment of Paris  from 1908, housed at the Musée d'Orsay, as well as another  drawing of the same subject and technique, housed at the Phillips Memorial Gallery (Washington, United States).

Renoir developed this theme in reference to Raphael's work, whose engraving by Marcantonio Raimondi ensured its success.
It is known through Ambroise Vollard that Renoir had Gabrielle, his governess, pose as a model for Venus, the central subject of the work.
